CHILDREN-CONFLICT: Children Severely Traumatised in Afghanistan

By Dipankar De Sarkar

LONDON, Oct 7 (IPS) - The children of Afghanistan have been left severely traumatised by nearly 20 years of warfare in their homeland, according to a study carried by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

The study involved a survey of more than 300 children in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, and revealed that

- 72 percent of children experienced the death of a family member in the past four years - a parent in the case of 40 percent of them.

- Nearly all the children have witnessed acts of violence during the fighting; two-thirds of them saw dead bodies or parts of bodies and nearly half saw many people killed during rocket and artillery attacks.

- Ninety percent of the children interviewed said they believed they would die during the conflict.

- Almost all children, sometimes or often, feel that life is not worth living.
